FRY NURSING IN EARTHEN PONDS
Four factors are of grate importance
when nursing first feeding larvae within in earthen ponds;
Ø The
availability of large quantities of zooplankton
Ø He
stocking density of the 3 day old larvae
Ø The
duration of the rearing period
CLEANING
Before the nursery pond is filled
with water the banks of the dikes should be cleaned and monitored on weak
points for leaks and repaired. Grasses should be cut and excess of silt from
the pond bottom removed. The pond bottom should then be allowed to dry for a
few days so as to kill potential fry predators (i.e. water insects, amphibian
larvae and catfish fingerlings from previous rearing), and to increase the
mineralization (oxidation) of nutrients in the pond bottom.
